The demand for Kandoodhoo chilies has experienced a decline, leading to a corresponding decrease in their market price.

At the onset of Ramadan, the cost of Kandoodhoo chilies stood at MVR 750 per kilogram. However, observations last week indicated a reduction in their price range to between MVR 500 and MVR 400 per kilogram.

According to some local traders, the current price for 100 grams of Kandoodhoo chilies ranges from MVR 25 to MVR 30. They noted a further lowering in the price per kilogram, with the price now plummeted to just MVR 280.

This significant drop in the price of Kandoodhoo chilies, renowned for their spiciness and flavor, is unprecedented during Ramadan.

Approximately 90 percent of Kandoodhoo islanders are involved in agricultural activities, yielding an initial weekly chili harvest of around 150 to 100 kilograms at the commencement of the fasting month.

Ahmed Rehan, the president of the island council, conveyed to 'Mihaaru' that the demand for Kandoodhoo chilies typically diminishes in the middle of Ramadan each year. He remarked, "However, it's customary for demand to surge again in the final ten days of Ramadan." Rehan anticipates a similar pattern this year but doubts that prices will escalate as markedly as in previous years.
