Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has been summoned to appear before Parliament's Economic Committee to provide clarification on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Maldives and China.
The committee met today to explore ways to clarify the details of the agreement and to review strategies for its implementation.
During the meeting, Hithadhoo South MP Ibrahim Nazil emphasized the importance of obtaining details from the Economic Ministry before moving forward and proposed summoning Minister Saeed along with relevant officials.
The proposal was endorsed by Hoarafushi MP Ali Moosa and approved by a majority vote.
China-Maldives FTA officially came into force in January this year. The agreement, originally initiated during the administration of Abdulla Yameen in 2017, was later reviewed during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.
The current government anticipates that the agreement could boost trade volume between the Maldives and China to USD 1 billion.
