State Trading Organisation (STO) is converting its Smart Store in Hulhumalé into a pharmacy, to improve access to medicines and address growing concerns over inadequate pharmaceutical services.
The transformation was announced by STO Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim during the company’s annual general meeting held at Barcelo Nasandhura last night.
He said that the Smart Store will be converted into a pharmacy within the next two weeks.
“The decision follows complaints about poor pharmacy services for those coming to Hulhumale' Hospital,” Shimad said.
“We have already started work to convert the Smart Store, and our aim is to ensure quality medicines are accessible to everyone.”
The Smart Store, launched in July 2023 with AI-integrated features, was located in the former STO outlet in Hulhumale' Phase One. However, it has seen limited customers since opening.
Shimad added that pharmacies will also be opened in both Hulhumale' Phase One and Phase Two.
“This is not a revenue-driven initiative. Our aim is to support the public by resolving the current issues with medicine availability,” he said.
STO has also signed a new agreement with India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to procure essential medicines for the Maldives. The company said this deal would significantly ease current import difficulties.
