AstraZeneca and the State Trading Organization (STO), in collaboration with the Cancer Society of Maldives, have launched its "Oncology Nurses Excellence" (ONE) program, aimed at enhancing cancer care in Maldives through training and development of oncology nurses.

The initiative was officially launched on April 17 and targets nurses working in oncology departments across the country’s major cancer treatment facilities.

The program highlights the vital role oncology nurses play in patient care, not only administering treatment, but also providing critical information and psychological support to those battling cancer.

The program seeks to strengthen Maldives’ capacity to deliver quality cancer care and keep pace with global advancements in oncology. It focuses on fostering collaboration between experts and frontline healthcare professionals to ensure more effective treatment outcomes.

The training initiative consists of four core sessions. The first session saw the participation of 55 oncology nurses, while the second session attracted 59 nurses.

“Oncology nurses are the essential link between patients and their care. They are not only involved in delivering treatment, but also play a critical role in educating patients about cancer and offering emotional support,” a representative of the Cancer Society of Maldives said.

STO has reiterated its commitment to raising awareness about cancer and supporting efforts to improve cancer treatment services across the country.
