Managing Director of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Ahmed Saudhee, has announced that members of the public will be able to purchase electric vehicles (EVs) from the government’s electric taxi fleet.
Speaking at MTCC’s annual general meeting held at the Barcelo Nasandhura yesterday, Saudhee said a company has been contracted to supply the fleet, with MTCC given the vehicle distributorship.
“EVs are becoming increasingly popular in the country. If anyone wants to purchase these vehicles privately, they will be able to do so through MTCC Trading. The process is underway,” Saudhee said in response to a shareholder’s question.
He added that the EV taxi project is fully funded by the government at a cost of MVR 80 million and was launched following a feasibility study that indicated long-term benefits for MTCC.
The EV taxi service, initially slated for a July launch, is now expected to begin operations in August. The service will start with a fleet of 100 vehicles and aims to recruit both full-time and part-time drivers.
The rollout will take place in three phases:
- Phase one (2024): Service to launch in Male', Hulhumale', and Velana International Airport.
- Phase two (2025): Vilimale' and Thilafushi.
-Phase three (2028–2029): Launch in Rasmale', Giraavaru, Addu City, Fuvahmulah, and Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi.
