All airlines operating at Velana International Airport (VIA) will shift to the new international terminal by September, according to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed.
In an exclusive interview with Mihaaru News, Shareef said the terminal will be launched in phases, with support from Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) planning and oversight by consultancy firm Modalis.
“The relocation of airline operations to the new terminal is being carried out strategically and under the guidance of our consultants to ensure a smooth transition,” he explained.
Shareef noted that premium airlines will begin using the terminal following a dedicated operational audit.
“It can be said with certainty that by September, all airline services will be operating from the new terminal,” he added.
Currently, 34 airlines operate to and from Velana International Airport.

The first aircraft to be served at the new terminal—set to open on Saturday night—will be from the national carrier, Maldivian.
Among the most significant upgrades to airport operations is the introduction of a fully automated baggage handling system. Shareef emphasized the impact of this upgrade, stating, “Previously, luggage sorting was done manually. Now, with automation, baggage will be loaded faster, and aircraft turnaround times will be significantly reduced.”
He also highlighted how the new terminal will bring operational efficiency and service improvements.
“The new terminal will make processes easier for airlines, faster for passengers, and enhance the overall quality of services offered by MACL,” he said.
The terminal, constructed at a cost of USD 457 million (approximately MVR 7 billion), began development in 2016. However, due to some challenges, its completion was delayed.
Now in its final stages, the terminal features 47 check-in counters and six self-service kiosks. Officials expect the new facility to offer service speeds over 30 percent faster than the existing terminal, significantly improving the passenger experience.
