Addu residents have for years endured the hardships of uneven roads and flooding in rains. That is, until the Addu Roads and Drainage project took place under a line of credit from India’s Exim Bank, with the work carried out by the renowned Afcons Infrastructure Limited.

Afcons approached the project with determination to better the lives of Addu residents by producing state-of-the-art modern roads suited for a bustling city such as Addu.
The road network covers 111km, along with a 1.4 km detour link road with 2 ocean bridges.
The project also necessitated that Afcons carry out construction on narrow, high traffic roads. This presented a unique engineering challenge for Afcons, who, despite the challenges, succeeded in developing top quality roads.

The project was not limited to simply constructing the road, but also included other supporting infrastructure. Under this, Afcons laid 106km of drainage works, 41km of utility ducts and 38 pumping stations across Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo. This has brought long awaited relief to Addu residents who have, for too long, struggled with flooded roads during every season of rain.
Mr Krishnamurthy, Executive Vice President – Operations, Afcons, said, “Executing this project was an engineering feat, marked by constant challenges from uncharted underground utilities and high-water table affected by tidal fluctuations, to extreme site constraints such as narrow roads and corrosive coastal conditions. Inaccessible areas limited our use of heavy machinery, so we innovated with custom-built lifting solutions, including wheeled lifters. Every obstacle demanded on-the-spot ingenuity, and we consistently came up with innovative solutions. The result is a transformative infrastructure project that stands as a testament to our resilience, adaptability, and commitment to delivering lasting impact for the people of Addu.”

Alongside this, Afcons also installed 160km of street lighting and 376 CCTV cameras which will enhance street security.
The project has successfully delivered the promise of improved connectivity through modern roads and ocean bridges in Addu City. This, in turn, facilitates more convenient access to essential services for residents.
The project is also a boon to Addu’s thriving tourism industry, as well as local businesses.

All in all, the completion of the project promises reduced economic losses even during adverse weather conditions and improves lives in the city of Addu.
Like many Afcons projects, this project contributes to long term economic resilience and sustainable growth.
