The supply of onions in Male' market has run out as severe weather continues to hamper port operations and disrupt the supply chain.

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has delayed the clearance of goods due to rough weather, with importers unable to unload consignments.

The weekly onion shipment was also affected by the weather, leading to the current shortage.

According to importers, a vessel carrying onions has docked, but around two tonnes of onions remain on board as unloading has been delayed.

Muduvaali, the country’s largest onion importer, said it has exhausted its stock and temporarily halted supply. However, the company expects fresh stock to be available from tomorrow.

While major importers have run out, some small retail outlets still have limited stock. Before the shortage, a sack of onions sold for between MVR 350 and MVR 400. Prices in local markets range from MVR 18 to MVR 25 per kilogram.

Maldives sources most of its onions from India at special rates. India has increased its onion export quota to Maldives by 56 percent this year.
