STO sells onions at MVR 15 per kilo

In response to the onion shortage and subsequent price hike, STO has brought in a shipment of onions and started selling it at MVR 15 per kilo.

STO said that the shipment has been brought for the purposes of market stabilization after the shortage of onions caused due to adverse weather conditions.

According to the company, onions will be available now at STO People's Choice and STO Wholesale Centre.

The shortage caused onion prices to rise to MVR 450 to MVR 500 per sack last week. A kilo was priced at between MVR 20 to 30. However, availability has improved after onion shipments were cleared following a let up of adverse weather conditions.

Onions are brought to Maldives from India at a special rate granted by the Indian government. India has also increased the quota for this year to 56 percent.
