The amount of unpaid taxes and fees in the Maldives have reached MVR 14 billion, according to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). This represents an increase of MVR 3 billion compared with the previous year.
The largest outstanding amounts are in resort rent, goods and services tax (GST), and income tax. At the end of last year, resort rent arrears totaled MVR 5.6 billion, GST arrears stood at MVR 3.3 billion, and unpaid income tax reached MVR 2 billion.
The state also has an outstanding tourism GST (TGST) of MVR 1.4 billion. In addition, government-owned companies owed MVR 2.4 billion in taxes.
MIRA said it recovered MVR 1.4 billion from outstanding dues last year. However, the overall amount owed to the state has increased by around 30 percent.
Despite rising arrears, government revenue hit a record MVR 33 billion in 2025, driven largely by higher airport development charges, departure taxes, green taxes, and TGST collections.
