Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has announced that fuel prices for fishermen will be maintained at the existing rate.

MIFCO announced yesterday that they have increased the price of fuel sold at fish purchase centres and boats following rising global fuel prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East, citing that STO too had raised prices.

STO, however, revised their decision and later announced that under the government's 'Fahi Hakatha' program, fishermen will be provided fuel at the subsidized rates.

Following this, MIFCO, too, announced that they will be providing fuel to fishermen at the existing rate, without any changes.

MIFCO said that in accordance with their March 5 announcement, fishing vessels weighing fish will receive a litre of diesel at MVR 16.54. Vessels weighing fish exceeding 3 tonnes will receive a litre of diesel at MVR 16.04.

The price of a litre of diesel for the general public purchasing diesel from MIFCO will be maintained at MVR 17.54.

MIFCO noted that keeping diesel prices unchanged for fishing vessels is intended to ease pressure on the fishing community.
