President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Sunday, renamed the Department of Heritage to the National Centre for Cultural Heritage.

Established under the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage, the purpose of the centre is to safeguard items and historical sites that are culturally significant and ensure Maldivian cultural heritage is documented, preserved and protected.

The ministry recently completed the survey conducted by Maldives Heritage in Meedhoo, Addu Atoll. During the survey, the team collected data regarding 267 monuments in 10 different areas of Meedhoo, including the Koagannu Cemetery - the oldest and the most historically significant cemetery in the country.
