President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed concerns regarding the discord and division within People's National Congress (PNC) in approach of the parliamentary elections slated for the 21st of April.
Speaking at a campaign meeting to open a booth of the Vilingili Constituency inside Male' City, President Muizzu asserted that this election is the time when everyone must become one and unite to realize the ambitious developmental projects set to be launched by his administration. He further assured that if everyone advances amicably with the nation's best interests as the topmost priority, PNC will be able to win the elections.
President stated that the parliament's role in fulfilling the people's wishes will be crucial and maintained that projects cannot be proceeded without the cooperation of the parliament. Therefore, the President emphasized that casting the ballot for PNC candidates contesting in this election and PNC winning the election is of great importance.
However, he expressed concerns of the opposition gaining a greater chance due to discord and conflict within PNC which may lead to the loss of many seats and consequently, cause loss to the people.
The President had said this regarding some PNC candidates who lost in the primaries contesting in this election as independent candidates, as this raises the chance of ballots being divided. While that remains the case, the largest number of candidates in this year's election are also mostly independent contestants.
"There is no reason to relinquish the seats in our hand such as the Vilin'gili Constituency. Please don't do this," the President implored.
"Naifaru Constituency. My candidate for the Naifaru Constituency is Baas, the candidate who secured our primaries, who has my full trust and who has 100 percent of our trust is Baas. But if another person, someone from amongst us, starts working to win this same chair, it will end up handing our this chair that we have always held of old to MDP this time. That is how it is going now. Do not do this, people of Naifaru."
The President said that similar to Vilin'gili, Naifaru is an island that has always observed significant numbers of supporters for the PNC/ Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) coalition. However there is fear that the seat may get lost within a conflict inside the coalition owing to the present state of this constituency's seat.
He requested the people to display the unity that was observed at the presidential elections once more without allowing for division.
