Maafushi Prison video circulating on social media is old: Corrections

A video circulating on social media showing a cell in Maafushi Prison decorated with lights and set up like a club is an old video, Maldives Correctional Service said today.

The video, taken on a mobile which has surfaced online, shows blue and red lights inside a prison cell with walls covered in black and white wallpaper, various pieces of furniture, and people lounging around and using their phones.

Although the video claims to show the current state of the prison, the footage has been circulating since 2022, Correction said in their statement.

“We urge the public to contact this agency before spreading information about institutions related to national security,” Corrections said.

Earlier, videos of prisoners cutting cakes and celebrating birthdays have also circulated online.

Authorities have recently suspended and arrested several individuals, including corrections officers, for smuggling items into Maafushi Prison.
