Over 100,000 cigarettes which were being smuggled in to Maldives was seized at Addu International Airport yesterday.
In a post on social media platform X today, Maldives Customs Service announced the seizure of these 130,155 cigarette sticks.
Last month, a person was caught attempting to bring in cigarette cartons in a dustbin bag from the Departure Terminal at Velana International Airport. A police officer and a former police officer are accused in this case. The two were arrested at the time, but have since been released.
Under the amendment to the Tobacco Act which came into effect last November, vapes, as well as materials used to produce cigarettes, cigars, etc cannot be brought in to the Maldives.
