Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthhalib said the ministry has been carrying out the cleaning and development planning of Sultan Park since it was transferred under their authority.

Malé City Council initially closed off areas of the park for renovation early last year. However, no work was carried out there.

In a post on X, the minister said the park was transferred under the ministry's care on February 19 following a request by Malé City Council due to the extended duration of partial closure, criminal activity within the premises and mosquito breeding there.

According to Dr. Muthhalib, the ministry has begun the process of cleaning the area and planning renovations there.

He added that the ministry is also preparing a site survey drawing for Sultan Park, as no such drawing currently exists. The renovation plan of the park would soon be finalised and work is expected to begin soon, Muthhalib also said.

While the ministry has taken over the Sultan Park's renovation, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in a recent podcast, said that the park would be developed in a way that everyone would be able to enjoy the space.

Sultan Park, as it is now, was developed when President Muizzu served as a Housing Minister.
