The service of issuing National Identity Cards and Passports to Maldivians residing in Malaysia has been inaugurated today.
The service was launched today at a meeting held between President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Maldivians residing in Malaysia.
President Muizzu is currently in Malaysia on an official visit.
This is the first time that the services have been made available abroad.
The service will be available from the Maldives High Commission in Malaysia from tomorrow onwards.
A higher number of Maldivians, including students, reside in Malaysia.
At the ceremony, President Muizzu stated that the government is undertaking efforts to further expand services available to Maldivians residing in Malaysia.
A Student Association to represent Maldivian students pursuing courses in Malaysia was also established during the ceremony.
The President said that USD 3000 will be deposited to the association each month to assist in its running.
The President said that he understands the importance of a student association through his experiences while studying in the UK.
