International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) has conferred an honorary doctorate on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
This marks the first time a Maldivian has received such recognition from the institution.
At a special ceremony held today, President Muizzu was awarded the honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic Leadership and Civil Development. The degree was presented by the Constitutional Head of the university, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, in recognition of his contributions to upholding Islamic principles and governance.
In her remarks, Tunku Azizah expressed pride in conferring the honor on Dr Muizzu, describing it as a significant occasion for the university.
Maldivian students have been studying at the university since 1990. Over 380 Maldivians have graduated from IIUM across undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels.
Alumni are actively contributing to various sectors including law, journalism, education, finance, and Islamic affairs, the university said.
Notable Maldivian alumni of IIUM include, former Prosecutor General Ahmed Muizzu; who was the first Maldivian to study at the university, former Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, former Attorney General Dr Hassan Saeed and former Supreme Court judge Husnu Suood, Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, MMA Governor Ahmed Munawwar, and Dr Ali Zahir.
IIUM has also played a vital role in the founding of the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) and assisting in the development of its academic standards.
