HDC to celebrate 21 years of Hulhumalé being inhabited

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has decided to host a special festival to mark 21 years since Hulhumalé was first inhabited.

HDC said that event, dubbed 'My Hulhumalé Festival' would be held for one week from May 10 onwards.

The company said the celebrations would include special activities tailored to different age groups, scheduled across various days of the week.

This includes a photography competition, a family carnival, a Hulhumalé discount week, a health camp, a Hulhumalé story photo walk and a beach festival. HDC is also going to organise a fishing competition and a cycling championship tournament.

People first inhabited Hulhumalé on May 12, 2004, following the artificial island's reclamation.

The Hulhumalé Project was launched in 1997 by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom to solve the housing problem faced in Malé. The first phase of the project was inaugurated on October 16, 1997 by Maumoon.
