Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has decided to rejoin Adhaalath Party, which currently remains politically neutral, but had formed a coalition government during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's MDP-led administration.
Attaching a photo from when he was appointed as Islamic Minister during former President Mohamed Waheed's administration February 19, 2012, Shaheem announced his decision to join the party, and contest as the party's president.
"I will contest the internal elections to elect a new party president later this year. God willing," Shaheem said.
Shaheem's decision was also welcomed by several leaders of Adhaalath Party, including Sheikh Ilyas Hussain, Abdulla Rasheed, Sheikh Mohamed Anil and Dr. Iyaz Mohamed Latheef.
Following his term as Islamic Minister during former President Waheed's administration, Shaheem also served as Islamic Minister during former President Abdulla Yameen's government. Shaheem was also Yameen's running mate during the 2018 presidential elections.
Since Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) was dissolved earlier this year, Shaheem had not joined any new political parties.
He served Adhaalath Party for 12 years before joining PPM.
The party has maintained a neutral stance since the current administration took office. Although its president, Sheikh Imran, resides in Thailand, he has made occasional public comments despite the party’s official position.
