Independent institution, Broadcasting Commission of Maldives (BroadCom)'s member Mohamed Abdulla has been appointed to the senate of ruling party, People's National Congress (PNC).
This was announced in a special ceremony held at the party's office last night, where former PPM members who maintained contact with PNC joined the party officially. It was also the party's senate's first meeting.
During the event, Mohamed Abdulla, who was appointed to BroadCom on January 21 was awarded the letter of appointment to the PNC senate by the party's president Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The Broadcom membership requirements do not prohibit members being part of a political party. It only states that a person in a position elected under the Constitution or a law cannot be a member of the Broadcasting Commission.
However, some have pointed out that the involvement of an independent commission's member in a political party would raise questions regarding the member and commission's integrity.
The BroadCom Act also states that members should not participate in decisions and meetings concerning a personal interest of the members.
Broadcom members in the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen were also involved in organizing the meetings of the then ruling PPM. The issue at the time moved the parliament to remove Fathimath Zeina from the commission.
