The Gypsy moth caterpillar (Huvani) infestation at Kaadedhdhoo Airport has been brought under control under the guidance of the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare.

The outbreak had been ongoing for over a month and recently intensified, with photos shared by an airport employee showing caterpillars covering several areas of the island, including the children’s park, canteen, and passenger terminal. The children’s park, although still open, was said to be heavily infested.

The issue drew attention online after a social media post tagging the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, and Villa Airlines, the operator of the airport, went viral.

In response, airport firefighters were seen applying pesticides to affected areas. According to the airport, control efforts had initially been delayed by heavy rains but resumed afterward, successfully curbing the spread.

The ministry said the airport had not previously requested support.

However, after the issue was highlighted on social media, the ministry contacted airport officials and advised them on treatment steps, including sending a technical guide on gypsy moth control.
