Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has reached a temporary agreement with boat owners protesting its decision to ban access to the jetty opposite the Hulhumalé Rashu Market.
Boat owners had gathered at the Hulhumale' commercial jetty to protest against the restrictions and fines imposed on vessels approaching the Hulhumale Lakudi Jetty.
They also raised concerns over the removal orders issued for boats moored between the ferry terminal and the Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) shed, saying they were left without a viable docking option for cargo transport.
The protests followed HDC's April 9 directive for the removal of vessels in the lagoon to make way for a cargo jetty development project. As the deadline passed without compliance, HDC reiterated its removal order earlier this week, sparking the protest.
In response, HDC officials met with the boat owners last night to discuss concerns and offer a temporary solution. Following the meeting, HDC said the boats could be temporarily relocated to an alternative area while the jetty project moves forward.
In a statement, HDC said it remained committed to working with the public and businesses to resolve issues and ensure continuity of essential services.
