Maldives government has strongly condemned an incident in which Israeli forces reportedly opened fire on a diplomatic delegation visiting Jenin in the occupied West Bank, calling the act a “grave violation” of international law and diplomatic norms.
In a statement on Thursday, Maldives said that the attack as a serious breach of Israel’s obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which guarantees the protection of diplomatic personnel.
“The targeting of diplomats, who are protected under international law, undermines the integrity of diplomatic engagement and must be unequivocally condemned,” the statement read.
The government urged the international community to take “concrete action” to hold those responsible accountable and to ensure the safety of diplomatic missions globally.
“The protection of diplomatic personnel must remain inviolable at all times, including during conflict,” the government said, calling on world powers to uphold legal and moral responsibilities in the face of such violations.
