Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced plans to build a 100 metre high tower representing Hulhumale'.
The 'iconic tower' was announced during yesterday's ceremony to unveil the revised masterplan for Hulhumale'.
The tower is to be located in Hulhumale' Phase 2 close to where Farukolhufushi ends.
HDC plans to develop Farukolhufushi as a green space. The area is designed to include a small football court, other sports courts, a barbecue area, an event space, a botanical garden, mangroves, amphitheater, petting zoo, Esjehige and a pump track.
HDC's Chief Planning Officer Ahmed Zinaf said that the iconic tower is planned to be Hulhumale's third identity, and will be 100 metres high.
Buildings of this height usually are 25 to 30 storeys high, which is about the height of the Hiyaa Towers.
"The aim is for this to be the place that comes to mind whenever someone mentions Hulhumale'," he said.
At present, the main landmark of Hulhumale' is the second mosque built in Hulhumale' Phase 1, with the second being Hiyaa Towers.
"The other aim of this tower is to provide space for additional jobs when a financial district is being established," Zinaf said.
There are highrise landmarks in other countries as well, including the Lotus Tower in Sri Lanka, Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia, Burj Khalifa in UAE and Guoco Tower in Singapore.
