President receives World No-Tobacco Day Special Recognition Award

World Health Organization has presented the World No-Tobacco Day Special Recognition Award to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is acknowledgement of his efforts to stop the use of tobacco in the Maldives.

World Health Organization has presented the World No-Tobacco Day Special Recognition Award to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is acknowledgement of his efforts to stop the use of tobacco in the Maldives.

The award was announced in a message from WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in which he commended President Muizzu for his 'exemplary leadership and commitment to protecting the health of people in the Maldives.'

The WHO commended the Maldives' actions in ratifying an amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, banning vapes, raising the legal age for sale of tobacco products to 21 and banning advertising and sponsorship of tobacco products.

WHO said that these actions represent a powerful example for other countries seeking to reduce tobacco use. The organization said that the vision for a smoke-free Maldives will save lives and improve the health and wellbeing of generations.
