President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that he has instructed STELCO and Fenaka to compile a poly under which tariff rates in the domestic category in electricity provision can be decreased, and to implement it.
In a post on X, the President included the current tariff rate in the domestic category and the amount that would be charged once it is decreased:
Band 0 - 100: Now: 1.50, New rate: 1.25
Band 101 - 200: Now: 1.70, New rate: 1.50
Band 201 - 300: Now: 2.15, New rate: 1.50
Band 301 - 400: Now: 2.50, New rate: 1.50
Band 401 - 500: Now: 2.95, New rate: 2.66
Band 501 - 600: Now: 3.55, New rate: 3.20
Band 600+ : Now: 4.25, New rate: 3.83
Experts maintain that one of the main reasons why electricity bills in the domestic category are high due to high tariff rates in the seven determined bands.
The biggest change to tariff rates in Maldives was brought in 2009. Previously, electricity charges were in three bands. In 2016 and 2019, discounts were granted to electricity prices, and the rates in Male' and the atolls were brought to the same level. However, the total tariff rates remained unchanged.
