In preparation for Eid Al-Adha, Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, in collaboration with island councils, have begun installing lights and decorative arches in 65 islands across Maldives.
The initiative is funded by the government and aims to create a festive atmosphere throughout the country.
The practice of lighting up Male’, Hulhumale’, and Vilimale’ with colored lights and arches began during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s tenure as Mayor of Male’ City.
Since then, the tradition has expanded to other islands, becoming a nationwide celebration during Eid.
Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef, told Mihaaru News that all islands which received decorative lights during Eid al-Fitr will also be lit this Eid.
Installation work has already begun in Male’, Hulhumale’, and Vilimale’, carried out by staff from the city council and the ministry.
Last Eid saw major decorations in key areas such as Republic Square and Hulhumale’ Central Park, featuring colorful lighting and arches.
The capital is once again preparing for a vibrant celebration, with public events expected to follow the scale of last year, which included a color festival, Koadi Nerun, Maali parade, an Eid show, and a fireworks display.
This year, the government has designated three islands for the official national Eid celebrations. They include Haa ALifu atoll Kelaa, Kaafu atoll Guraidhoo, and Laamu atoll Gan.
