STELCO has announced that power will be restored in Male' and Hulhumale' soon.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated in a post on X that he has instructed relevant authorities to conduct an investigation into the power outage across Male', Hulhumale' and Velana International Airport.
The President further assured that the government will work towards ensuring such an incident is not repeated.
Police have now commenced the investigation.
Meanwhile, STELCO has said that their teams are now working on completing necessary check ups before re-energizing the Greater Male' grid, stating that they will commence the re-energizing process as soon as the check ups are completed.
Schools across the area are closing for the day, sending students home. Offices are also being shut, with employees returning home.
MNDF's Fire and Rescue Teams are active in assisting persons stuck in elevators at many residences due to the sudden power outage.
By 13:45pm, STELCO said that electricity had been restored at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital and Dharumavantha Hospital, considered critical areas. The places faced power interruptions again, with Male' City Group of Hospitals announcing that critical areas are being provided electricity through back up systems. They said that there are no interruptions to patient care services.
Dhiraagu, meanwhile, stated that the company's mobile cell sites are currently operating on battery backup, warning that a prolonged outage may result in interruption of mobile services.
MTCC also announced that they are facing difficulties in issuing tickets for ferries and buses. However, public transport will continue uninterrupted, they assured, with bus travels to be provided free until the company resolves issues faced in selling tickets.
