Maldives has been elected as one of the Vice-Presidents for the upcoming 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) set to begin in September.

Five Vice-President's will be elected in each session of the UNGA from the Asia Pacific Group.

In Addition to Maldives, Bangladesh, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Timor Leste had been elected during the UNGA meeting held last night.

In a post on X, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu expressed gratitude for the international support and highlighted the Maldives' eagerness to collaborate with global partners to ensure the success of the General Assembly.

This election comes at a significant moment, as the Maldives celebrates 60 years of UN membership.

President Muizzu reaffirmed the nation’s strong commitment to multilateralism and its ongoing role in global diplomacy.

This marks the third time the current administration has participated in an international election of this scale.

Previously, during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Maldives signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations and successfully assuming the Presidency of the 76th session of UNGA.A
