A man serving a life sentence in connection with a drug-related case has died while in custody at Maafushi Prison, said Maldives Correctional Service.
The deceased has been identified as Moosa Hassan, 45, from Noonu atoll Maafaru.
Authorities reported that the death occurred on Wednesday night, but did not disclose the specific cause. Corrections confirmed that Moosa had been brought to Male' in an emergency in April and was admitted to IGMH. However, details of his medical condition have not been shared publicly.
Moosa Hassan was serving a 25-year sentence for a drug offense at the time of his death.
Maldives Correctional Service stated that all relevant authorities, including the police, Inspector of Correctional Service, Human Rights Commission, National Integrity Commission, and Moosa’s family have been informed of the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear, and further information has yet to be released.
