Minister of Fisheries Ahmed Shiyam has said today that the biggest challenge faced in developing fisheries is climate change.

In a message delivered on the occasion of World Oceans Day, the minister said that the sustainable form of fisheries practised in Maldives for centuries indicates Maldivian's consideration towards the issue.

He said that it is the responsibility of all to ensure that the oceans, surrounding environment and its flora and fauna are protected and passed on to generations to come.

The minister said that although many efforts are being made to develop fisheries in the Maldives, the biggest challenge faced at present is climate change and its adverse effects on the ocean.

He said that with the oceans heating up, fish migrate to deeper seas or distant areas. As a result, pole and line fishing is negatively affected.

Shiyam further said that affects of climate change can be best addressed at a global level. However, efforts are being made to mitigate these effects even at the national level, he said.
