Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has decided not to release 20 individuals who requested to be freed from custody after being placed under electronic monitoring.
The government had introduced the tagging system to address growing concerns about indefinite pre-trial detentions. Under the initiative, some detainees have been fitted with electronic monitoring devices, to be released from custody.
In a post on X, PG Office spokesperson Ahmed Shafeeu shared details of electronic monitoring requests:
- 121 detainees have applied for release under the electronic monitoring system
- 20 have been denied release
- Nine have been released so far
- 92 applications pending police assessments
PG Office previously said that only suspects deemed to pose a minimal threat to public safety would be considered for conditional release. Those accused of serious offences including child molestation, murder, terrorism, and major drug trafficking will remain in detention.
Conditional release after electronic monitoring follows consultations between President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Attorney General Ahmed Usham, and Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef.
