Former Home Minister Sheikh Imran Abdulla has today raised allegations regarding the circumstances around the passing of Maldives' first Islamic Minister and religious scholar Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari.
At the age of 55, Dr Majeed passed away seven years ago while he was receiving treatment in Lanka Hospitals after suffering a stroke while he was in Sri Lanka to attend a conference. As his condition was fairly serious even when he was taken to hospital, three surgeries had been conducted, and he was later on ventilator support.
Dr Majeed passed away on May 22, 2018.
With seven years having passed since his death, in a post on X this morning, Imran stated that it has now come to a point where the suspicions he held regarding Dr Majeed's death have now been confirmed.
He accused a group of people of having been involved in Dr Majeed's death.
Imran did not share any further details along with these allegations. He also did not respond to calls and messages from Mihaaru News, attempting to clarify his statement.
Imran currently resides in Thailand and runs a private business.
Although Imran has made these allegations today, it is not known whether the Maldivian Democratic Party administration in 2018 had conducted any investigations in to the death of Dr Majeed. At the time, Imran had been serving as Home Minister.
No such suspicions regarding Dr Majeed's death have been raised previously, by Imran or other persons.
