Police have begun issuing Interpol Green Notices to make information about child sex offenders who have completed their sentences and been released into society available to other countries.

In a statement issued today, police said that under Article 57 of the Special Procedures Act against Child Sex Offenders, a registry of child sex offenders has been established in Maldives.

Police said Interpol Green Notices have been issued for those who have completed their sentences and been released into society. This includes a total of 43 people which includes 25 Maldivians and 18 foreigners, according to police.

An Interpol Green Notice is a system used to warn Interpol member countries about individuals who may pose a threat to public safety.

Police said sharing information about people who commit such crimes with relevant authorities is important to ensure children's safety. They added that sharing this information internationally will enable other countries to monitor these individuals' activities and take necessary safety precautions.

Moreover, police stated this will also provide other countries with information about special considerations required if and when employing such individuals.

According to police, since foreign workers are people who move between countries seeking employment, if a Green Notice has been issued when they seek employment in another country, it provides an opportunity to prevent them from being employed in sectors involving children and provides the opportunity to closely monitor them.
