Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced his intention to run in the 2028 presidential election.
It has been reported that Solih made this announcement in a meeting with senior officials of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). MDP has not yet officially commented on this.
A close associate of Solih told Mihaaru that he had deliberated for a number of days with various MDP officials before making the announcement.
Ibu's announcement comes at a time when MDP has planned a rally for tonight where former President Mohamed Nasheed will be rejoining the party.
Nasheed has also expressed interest in contesting in the 2028 presidential election.
MDP decided on April 12 to hold the party's congress on August 15. It is believed that the congress will make a decision on a candidate that will represent the party in the 2028 elections.
Many say that the reason for Solih's losing the last presidential election was the split in MDP following differences of opinion between him and Nasheed, which led to the formation of The Democrats.
Although Nasheed did not contest in the last election, The Democrat's put forward Ilyas Labeeb as a candidate, who came third.
