MVR 5,000 disbursed to each person on poor registry as property zakat

Ministry of Islamic Affairs has distributed MVR 5,000 to each individual registered as poor.

According to the ministry, the distribution was made to those listed in the official poor registry, which currently includes 2,852 people.

A total of MVR 13.2 million was collected in property zakat this year.

This marks an increase from last year, when MVR 12.7 million was distributed, with each individual receiving MVR 4,000, according to data from Zakat House.

In addition, the ministry reported that this year saw a record amount of Fitr zakat collected, reaching MVR 13,264,819 by the end of the collection period.

The ministry had earlier decided in March, to distribute Fitr zakat equally among all individuals on the poor registry.

The ministry said that the decision was aimed at promoting social justice.
