Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has gifted Malaysia's former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamed a model of the Friday Mosque's minaret.
Mahathir, who served as Malaysia's Prime Minister for 22 years and is considered to have spearheaded the country's development, celebrates his 100th birthday today (10th July 2025). He served as Prime Minister from 1981 to 2003.
Age and construction of the Friday Mosque minaret
The Friday Mosque minaret is one of Maldives' most religious and historically prevalent structures. It has been standing for 300 years now and finished being built in the year 1085 AH (Hijri year). The minaret was built during the reign of King Iskandar in the style of the minarets of Arabia at that time, and is now one of the most famous structures in Male'.
Maumoon and Mahathir shed light on Palestine issue
Maumoon, currently 88 years old, went to Malaysia on vacation and congratulated Mahathir on his 100th birthday and wished him good health, as said by his office.
The meeting was held at the Perdana Leadership Foundation and was done to further strengthen the relationship of both countries, Maumoon's office further said.
Maumoon acknowledged the work Mahathir has done during his time as Prime Minister and his efforts to foster unity among Muslims. He has also stated his concern about the ongoing attacks against Palestine and that world leaders have not done enough for Palestinians.
Maumoon's children Faris Maumoon and Yumna Maumoon were also present during the meeting.
Maldives and Malaysia had a very close relationship during Maumoon and Mahathir's time and the friendship has gotten stronger since. Even after Maumoon's presidency 25 years ago, he still visits Mahathir on his trips to Malaysia.
The assistance given by Malaysia in building the Islamic Center during Maumoon's presidency was deeply acknowledged. Mahathir himself was present in Maldives for the opening of the center.
