President seeks extension of Children’s Ombudsperson’s term

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has requested Parliament to extend the term of the Children’s Ombudsperson, Niumath Shafeeq.

In a letter to Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, the President said that Niumath’s current term is due to expire on 23 July, and proposed a further five-year extension under the Children’s Rights Protection Act.

He also asked Parliament to make a decision on the matter.

Niumath was appointed to the post on 23 July 2020. The role was established as an independent body tasked with overseeing the implementation of the Children’s Rights Protection Act.

In addition to her role as Ombudsperson, Niumath has a background in early childhood education, holding both a degree and a master’s from Australia in the field.

She has worked extensively as a teacher and in collaboration with UNICEF on preschool development in Maldives.

She also serves as the Chief Commissioner of the Maldives Girl Guide Association.
