Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party MP for North Galolhu Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) has proposed to parliament that the Prosecutor General and Police be summoned to parliament over failure to take adequate action against those negligent in accidents.

A major accident that occurred in Male' on Sunday night claimed the life of a 17 year old boy, leaving a 16 year old and a 40 year old in hospital with serious injuries.

MP Ibrahim submitted a letter to parliament stating that many such accidents are left without proper action being taken against those found to be negligent.

In the letter, Ibrahim notes that over a thousand accidents have occurred in the Malé area alone in the past six months, yet concerns persist over the lack of legal consequences for those deemed negligent. He pointed out that accidents are leading to victims being left disabled, as well as an increasing number of deaths.

The letter calls for the Prosecutor General and senior officials of the Police to be summoned to explore the challenges faced by the institutions in pursuing legal action in similar cases.

Ibrahim also seeks to summon the Male' City Council over the issue.

Sunday night's accident occurred when a motorcycle with two minors crashed into a jogger crossing the street, and then hit an oncoming pickup truck.

A 17 year old died in the crash. The injured 16 year old is now being treated in IGMH's ward, while the 40 year old jogger remains in the Intensive Care Unit.
