David Lammy MP, the UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during the President’s visit to United Kingdom.
The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations between the Maldives and UK, especially in fisheries, climate change adaptation, renewable energy development, and expanding opportunities in education and scholarships.
Both sides also discussed new areas for collaboration across key sectors, reaffirming their commitment to enhancing the long-standing partnership between the two nations.
President Muizzu also met with Lindsay Hoyle MP, Speaker of the House of Commons at the Speaker’s House in the Palace of Westminster, London yesterday.

The meeting highlighted the six decades of partnership between Maldives and UK with discussions focusing on developing shared priorities, especially in environmental stewardship, sustainable tourism, fisheries and promoting a democratic governance.
Following the courtesy call, President Muizzu signed the Guestbook to mark the occasion and was later given a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster.
President Muizzu also took part in a high-level meeting with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Maldives, held at the House of Lords.

Opening the session, MP Yasmin Qureshi, Co-Chair of APPG Maldives, underscored the international community’s shared responsibility to support Small Island Developing States (SIDS) through enhanced financial assistance, technical expertise, and sustained global commitment.
Addressing the gathering, President Muizzu reaffirmed Maldives’ commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with the United Kingdom, anchored in shared values, mutual respect, and strong people-to-people ties.
He expressed gratitude for the UK’s continued support in key areas including justice sector reform, democratic consolidation, climate adaptation, defence cooperation, and capacity building.
President Muizzu also highlighted the rich educational and cultural exchanges that have long characterised Maldives–UK relations and expressed confidence in APPG Maldives’ pivotal role in fostering dialogue and enhancing bilateral cooperation.
Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and United Kingdom was established on 26 July 1965.
