Assistant Commissioner of Prisons Mohamed Asif has been dismissed yesterday, after having been on an 8 month suspension with pay.
A media official from Maldives Correctional Service said that Asif has been dismissed after an inquiry was completed. No further details were disclosed.
Asif was suspended on November 7 last year after an issue of over MVR 200,000 from Prisons Club account being deposited to various other accounts came to light.
Asif continued to receive full pay even when he was on suspension, reports indicate.
Staff of the Maldives Correctional Service had earlier raised the issue of Asif's alleged corruption and submitted a petition to Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer. Since then, staff have raised concerns about the delays in taking action against Asif.
