The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has urged the public to avoid all non-essential sea travel due to rough seas and strong winds brought on by intensified Hulhan’gu (southwest) monsoon conditions.

In a public advisory, MNDF warned seafarers and island communities to remain alert and monitor weather updates closely. Travelers are advised to avoid sea travel at night and to postpone trips if adverse weather warnings—such as yellow or orange alerts—are in effect.

The Maldives Meteorological Service on Wednesday forecast severe weather across the country over the next four days. Strong winds and rough seas are expected as the Hulhan’gu monsoon strengthens further.

A white alert has been issued from HA. Atoll to Faafu Atoll from 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Winds are expected to reach up to 40 mph during storms, making sea conditions particularly dangerous.

In some areas, wind speeds have already exceeded forecasts. Hulhumalé recorded gusts up to 52 mph this morning, damaging property and vehicles. The strongest winds were observed in F. Nilandhoo, where gusts reached 61 mph, according to the Met Office.

Authorities continue to monitor conditions closely and urge the public to take all necessary precautions.
