Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in the Maldives tomorrow for a two-day official visit, coinciding with the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations — a move hailed by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as a powerful symbol of enduring bilateral friendship amid political tensions.

In a statement issued today, Solih welcomed Modi’s presence at the milestone celebration, describing the visit as “a mark of respect for the Maldivian people” and a reflection of India’s longstanding commitment to regional partnership.

“I thank President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for extending the invitation to Prime Minister Modi to attend the Independence Day celebrations as a special guest,” Solih said. “His decision to visit the Maldives at such a time shows that political insults will not disrupt the strong and historic bond between our nations.”

Solih, who led Maldives from 2018 to 2023, emphasized that the visit is taking place during what he termed a “challenging phase” in Maldives–India relations. Even so, he said Modi’s presence affirms the strength of diplomatic ties that transcend political cycles.

“I am confident that Prime Minister Modi’s visit will be a successful one, and I believe it will elevate the relationship between our countries to a new level,” he added.

During the two-day trip, Prime Minister Modi and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu are expected to hold high-level discussions on a range of bilateral and regional matters. The visit will also see the inauguration of several development projects funded by India and the signing of new Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) across key sectors.

This marks Modi’s first visit to the Maldives since securing a third consecutive term as Prime Minister of India. It also represents the first official state visit to the Maldives since President Muizzu assumed office in November 2023.

As preparations continue across the capital for Saturday’s Independence Day ceremony, Modi’s visit is likely to be closely watched both at home and across the region, signaling continuity in India–Maldives relations despite shifting political narratives.
