India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has concluded his state visit to the Maldives.
PM Modi held high-level talks and took part in a range of activities aimed at deepening bilateral ties.
Modi arrived in Male' on Friday morning at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. He was welcomed at Velana International Airport before being formally received in a ceremonial reception in Male'.
The visit, Modi’s first to Maldives since beginning his third term in office coincided with the 60th anniversary of Maldives’ independence and six decades of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
During the visit, PM Modi and President Muizzu held comprehensive talks focused on enhancing cooperation across sectors including health, infrastructure, defence, and trade. A number of Memoranda of Understanding and agreements were signed to support joint development efforts.
Among the highlights was the virtual inauguration of several India-backed development projects and a symbolic tree-planting ceremony at Sultan Park, reflecting what both leaders described as a deep-rooted friendship.
Modi also handed over two Aarogya Maitri Health Cubes to the Maldives, part of India’s initiative to strengthen healthcare support in partner countries.
Other key engagements included the inauguration of the new Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) headquarters, the Dhoshimeyna Building, and a state banquet hosted by President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed.
Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef also paid a courtesy call on the Indian prime minister during the visit.
Before departing, Modi joined President Muizzu and the First Lady to witness a military parade in Male', held to mark Independence Day celebrations.
