A man with a long history of criminal offences has been sentenced to seven months in prison for a robbery committed earlier this year in Malé.

Fawaz Kalhuthu'thu, of H. Redhan, was charged in connection with an incident that occurred on May 1 during which he entered a shop and threatened the shopkeeper with a knife before stealing MVR 700.

Police said that Fawaz has been arrested 52 times prior in relation to various criminal cases.

Criminal Court charged him with robbery and unlawful possession of a sharp weapon. Fawaz pleaded guilty to both charges.

He was sentenced to four months and 24 days for the robbery. For the weapons offence, he received a six-month sentence, but under concurrent sentencing rules, will serve only three months for that charge.

Fawaz previously received a 15-year prison sentence for setting fire to a motorcycle as well.
