With former Home Ministry Deputy Minister Mohamed Shaheed retracting his name from the position of a High Court judge, the position has been reopened for application by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

JSC was set to appoint former Home Ministry Deputy Minister Mohamed Shaheed and former Civil Service Court judge Abdulla Jameel Moosa for two of the open High Court judge positions, with 17 total individuals having applied.

However, due to Shaheed's involvement in PPM and PNC activities, his appointment to the position had received some criticism, resulting in him retracting his name and excusing himself.

Shaheed stated that he had retracted his name as he wanted to maintain the trust of the judiciary.

JSC has stated that interested parties can now apply for the position starting from today, with the deadline set for 12th August 2025.

While Shaheed had retracted his name, Jameel Moosa has been appointed and sworn in as a High Court judge.
