Maldives Correctional Service has announced an increase in the daily work allowance for prisoners, marking the first revision in 25 years.

Since the year 2000, prisoners were paid MVR 30 per working day, a rate that remained unchanged until now. According to Correctional Service media officer Aminath Yusreen Ahmed, the revised rates took effect on July 16.

Under the new structure, the minimum daily wage is MVR 50, with the allowance now categorized into eight grades based on the type and complexity of the work. Each grade increases the pay by MVR 10, meaning prisoners in Grade 8 now receive MVR 120 per day.

Tasks eligible for the allowance include sweeping, cleaning, electrical work, and construction work, among others.
