IUM and Villa College partner to offer SEN teaching diploma

Ministry of Education will cover all course fees and provide a monthly stipend of MVR 1,500 to each enrolled student.

Ministry of Education has signed an agreement with the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) and Villa College to offer a fully funded diploma course in Special Educational Needs (SEN) teaching.

The course, aimed at training teachers to support children with disabilities, will be delivered over one year at both institutions, with campuses in Male' and islands where Villa and IUM campuses are located.

Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu signed the agreement on behalf of the government. IUM was represented by Vice Rector Dr Ali Zahir, while Vice Rector Dr Ali Najeeb signed on behalf of Villa College.

Ministry of Education will cover all course fees and provide a monthly stipend of MVR 1,500 to each enrolled student.

Applications for the course are now open. Classes will be held on campus, with training available in Male' and at island campuses where either institution operates.

Minister Shafeeu has previously stated that schools in the Maldives require at least 600 qualified SEN teachers. Expanding training opportunities in the sector is part of the government policy to improve support for children with special needs.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has also assured to reinstate the risk allowance for SEN teachers.
