Customs last night detained and fined the eldest son of Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, and another individual, for attempting to bring in vapes to the Maldives.

Although Customs did not disclose the identities, they confirmed that two individuals had been held last night for bringing in vapes. Customs said that the two individuals had been fined and then released. However further action may be taken if the State decides to press charges considering the offence as smuggling. A decision on this will be taken later, they said.

One of the two individuals is Shaheem's son Maahil Shaheem, Mihaaru News reports. According to their sources, Maahil attempted to bring in 118 vape sticks. The other individual accompanying him attempted to bring in 107 vape sticks.

Customs has not revealed the amount of the fines the two were charged. Although a document regarding the fine has been circulating on social media, Customs has stated that it is not authentic.

Last week, Customs reported that fines for importing vapes into the Maldives have now totaled MVR 400 million, with one individual alone fined MVR 72 million.
